At the dawn of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, crucial technologies like AI, blockchain, cybersecurity are already shaping the contours of the future. As artificial intelligence is leaving the cradle, its applications in a wide array of domains open a whole new set of opportunities for the industry and society. From the study of atoms to the myriads of domains in the social world, and all the way to the stars and astrophysics, machine learning is increasingly acting as the driver of new and interdisciplinary scientific discoveries. The big data boom and the transformation of data into the “oil of the future” create the demand for enhanced capabilities to generate and analyze unprecedentedly large datasets. It also poses the necessity to keep the data secure through unconventional cybersecurity solutions and decentralized systems.

Biotechnology

Capitalizing on interdisciplinary biological research, the field harnesses cellular and biomolecular processes to spearhead the development of technologies and products that will improve the health of the human race and the planet. With the triple promise of healing, fueling, and feeding the world, biotechnology is also a key driver of environmental, clean energy, and industrial manufacturing solutions.

Advanced Materials

Historically, the longer periods of human development have been named after the materials we have used. However, we currently live in the age of rapid discovery of advanced materials that possess completely novel properties and huge advantages over the traditional ones. The industry with its encompassing cycle from materials extraction to recycling enables myriads of previously impossible solutions from lightweight vehicles to aerospace. Advanced materials research, with the potential to be exploited in high value-added products, is both a multidisciplinary area within itself and cross-cutting over technology areas and market sectors.


Robotics

Being an interdisciplinary field connecting computer science and engineering, robotics is concerned with research, development, and operation of devices that can react to sensory input, move, fly, and show intelligent behavior. Robotics research identifies diverse practical applications where robots can be used to complement or replace human activity.
